“Barrio in Technicolor” by Vanessa Shive

As an Ecuadorian illustrator and visual artist living in the Bay Area, Vanessa Shive‘s artwork draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of the Latino community. She captures an essence through a “costumbrista” and whimsical lens of magical realism. Her work is characterized by vibrant color, experimentation and texture and by representing community through art, she aims to create a sense of connection, pride and celebration.

“Shive’s art is rooted in magical realism, where everyday scenes glow with a fantastical twist.” –  Jennyann “Pie” Martinez for El Tecolote
