About the Exhibition<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Acci\u00f3n Latina presents “Otra Onda\/Otra Vez”<\/strong>, a revival of the groundbreaking 1981 exhibition \u201cOtra Onda\u201d, opening Friday, August 14, from 5:30 PM to 9 PM at the Juan R. Fuentes Gallery in San Francisco\u2019s Mission District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organized and curated by photographers Lou Dematteis, Joe Ramos, Gato Rivera, and Acci\u00f3n Latina, the exhibition brings together original photographs by all 19 photographers featured in the 1981 show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original \u201cOtra Onda\u201d was organized by visionary artist Ren\u00e9 Ya\u00f1ez and first exhibited at Galera de la Raza in 1981. It was a monumental exhibition and the first of its kind to document lowrider culture in a gallery or museum setting. The show later traveled to the Humboldt Park Cultural Arts Center in Chicago and the Art Gallery at Sonoma State University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when lowrider culture was stereotyped and criminalized, \u201cOtra Onda\u201d focused on the people and creatives who pushed culture forward in the Mission District. Its photographs helped change how lowriding was perceived within cultural institutions and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forty-five years later, “Otra Onda\/Otra Vez”<\/strong> offers a new generation the chance to see history through the photographs that first documented it. The San Francisco Lowrider Council will display cars during the opening, connecting those 1981 images with the culture as it lives on today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lou Dematteis, Joe Ramos, and Gato Rivera will attend the opening. The evening will feature a vinyl DJ set, refreshments, and lowriders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This exhibition will be on view from August 14 through October 17, 2026. Regular gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 1 PM- 5 PM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
