The 90s Matter in The Mission by Yano Rivera

Celebrate over five decades of bilingual journalism in service of the Bay Area’s Latinx community with live music, dancing, and a silent art auction!

In his debut exhibition, “The 90s Matter in The Mission” by Yano Rivera, he uses the archive of El Tecolote as source material to recreate articles from the 1990s as present-day comics. Rivera is not only preserving and reimagining the past but also addressing important social issues.El Tecolote’s historical role in addressing issues such as lead poisoning, gun violence, and racist ideologies like Proposition 187 in the Mission neighborhood still ring true today. The artist asks, “How do you make an archive and make it sing? Make it dance, make it perform?”
