Acción Latina has announced the lineup for the 31st Annual Encuentro del Canto Popular, a yearly concert and cultural festival with a long history in San Francisco’s Mission District. The Encuentro del Canto Popular (Encuentro) historically celebrates the Latin American nueva cancion movement and follows the evolution of that musical style from its roots as a protest movement against Latin American dictatorships, to the current iterations of new Latin American song.

This year the theme of the Encuentro is “El Renacimiento de la Cultura Popular” or the rebirth of Latin American popular culture, coinciding with the end of the fifth sun of the Aztec calendar, and will be celebrated with a celebration of corn, complete with food vendors all incorporating corn- tamales, pupusas, nacatamales, atol – and a ceremony surrounding the importance of corn by the Xiuhcoatl Danza Azteca dancers beginning at 5pm at 24th Street and York. Lowrider cars courtesy of the San Francisco Lowrider Council will line the streets and vendors will display their locally produced art merchandise.

Inside the Brava Theater the concert will begin at 8pm, opening with Latin-Indie singer / songwriter Diana Gameros and her quartet. Known in some circles as “The Latin Feist,”

Gameros has been cultivating a substantial Mission District following and many diehard fans with her experimental alt-Latin acoustic folk-pop stylings.

Quenepas Youth Ensemble, under the direction of percussionist Hector Lugo and folk dancer Shefali Shah, is an amazing group of young singers, dancers, and musicians seeped in the Puerto Rican traditions of Bomba music and dance. Aged 3 to 18, these budding cultural workers wow audiences by bringing new life to traditional music and dance.

La Santa Cecilia, named for the patron saint of musicians, will headline the Encuentro del Canto Popular with their powerhouse sound born in the barrios of East L.A. According to Reed Johnson of the Los Angeles Times, “like any number of older-sibling L.A. bands of Chicano pedigree — Ollin, Quetzal, Quinto Sol — La Santa Cecilia crafts music that is both

anchored by regional influences and well-traveled. In the trans-border world of contemporary rock and pop, mariachi trumpets joust with Stax-style horns, East L.A. tough guys weep over Morrissey’s despairing passion plays and digitally enhanced accordions lure dancers onto the floor as relentlessly as a disco beat. La Santa Cecilia hails from that milieu, and after years of attracting passionate followers across California and the Southwest with its dance-ready aural montages of cumbia, funk, punk, samba, son jarocho and klezmer, the band seems eager to make the leap from hardworking subculture icons to headliner status.” We are very excited to have La Santa Cecilia at the 31st Annual Encuentro del Canto Popular.

As the headliner finishes the concert in the main theater, the lively and danceable sounds of Miguel Govea y Los Compas will begin in the lobby of Brava’s theater complex, setting off the dance party that will close out the night in true San Francisco Mission District style.

The 31st Annual Encuentro del Canto Popular is a festival of music, dance, art, food, and fun for the whole family not to be missed. More than just an amazing concert, this year’s Encuentro is a fully rounded cultural event celebrating the renacimiento de la cultura popular in the heart of the Mission district.

This event is wheelchair accessible and all ages are welcome. Tickets available at http://www.brava.org $20 / $17 in advance / $15 students and seniors. Group rates available.
